Basin connects incoming events with analytical queries
An available platform built around Iceberg
On 1 October 2026, Cloudflare announced general availability of Basin, the new name for its Data Platform. It connects ingestion, an Iceberg catalogue and SQL queries over R2 object storage.
Follow an event to its use
An analytics platform becomes useful when a team can explain a record’s complete journey: receipt, transformation, retention and eventually an answer to a question. For an online service, that might cover errors, usage or resource consumption.
An open table format offers an architectural benefit by separating data from the tool querying it. Portability nevertheless needs a concrete exercise: write a small table, read it through another engine, and check types, updates and access rights.
Measure the whole circuit
Query speed describes neither event arrival delay nor result completeness. A pilot should include duplicates, late data and a source interruption. Relevant costs also cover ingestion, storage and table maintenance, with a retention policy established from the beginning.
Editorial retrospective: event dates are stated in the text.
