Haiku 5.5 puts small models against clearly defined tasks

A model for frequent workloads

On 7 October 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Haiku 5.5, a small model aimed at high-volume, cost-sensitive work such as classifying requests or summarizing content.

Divide work using a clear contract

Not every stage of an AI service needs the same reasoning. Detecting a category, extracting a field and deciding a consequential action impose different requirements. A compact model could be evaluated on stages with precisely defined inputs, outputs and failure cases.

Ticket triage, for example, can be compared against a collection already reviewed by people. Misrouting, ambiguous cases and requests needing rework should all be counted. Time savings must include correcting errors, rather than just initial generation.

Avoid apparent savings

A lower rate can be offset by more calls, more context or greater human review. A quick answer does not establish a correct decision either. Before adding model routing, teams should verify that it responds to a measured difference between tasks and that someone is responsible for handling uncertain outputs.
