MHS proposes a common interface for agents and instruments
Describing an instrument to an agent
On 27 August 2026, Anthropic opened a Model Hardware Standard research preview to selected laboratories and manufacturers. MHS proposes standardized drivers connecting agents to programmable devices.
Making commands understandable
A driver translates software operations into equipment actions. Here a command has more than a software type: it also has units, a valid range and physical consequences. A shared contract could make those details easier to inspect before an experiment begins.
For a laboratory, a sensible first trial would involve reading a sensor or performing a reversible, low-energy operation. It would compare the requested command, the actual action and the returned measurement, with an operator able to interrupt the process.
A preview is not a certification
The announced access is limited rather than generally available. A software description replaces neither hardware safety mechanisms nor a machine-specific risk assessment. The immediate interest is interoperability to evaluate, without assuming an instrument becomes safe simply because an agent knows how to call it.
