DynamoDB brings vectors closer to application data

Novoid

An index inside the existing database

On 5 August 2026, AWS announced general availability of native vector search in DynamoDB. Numerical representations, or embeddings, can sit beside application data and be queried by similarity.

Less synchronization to operate

For an application already using this database, the potential benefit concerns the data path. A product catalogue could keep a record and its vector together instead of maintaining a copy in a second engine. That could simplify some update flows, while leaving the team responsible for producing useful representations.

A meaningful evaluation would start with questions users actually ask. It would compare expected results, missing documents and response time, using the same business filters as the product.

Proximity does not guarantee relevance

A small mathematical distance proves neither that an answer is correct nor that someone may access a document. Authorization checks remain necessary, along with measurements of indexing and query costs. For a project whose data is elsewhere, this announcement alone does not justify a database migration.
