Rust 1.97: handling warnings through Cargo
A control in the build tool
Released on 9 July 2026, Rust 1.97.0 lets Cargo deny warnings without invalidating the underlying build cache. This deserves examination in projects seeking more visible diagnostics.
Decide what blocks work
Our recommendation starts with a simple distinction: a new warning needs to be understood, but an overly broad rule may interrupt unrelated work. The team must decide when a diagnostic blocks a contribution and who handles existing findings.
A first trial can use a small package and an intentional warning with a known cause. Compare results with the rule enabled and disabled, and check that the message clearly identifies the relevant file. A useful check gives developers a specific next action.
Measure the cost
We would also observe a second compilation after changing the policy. The practical aim is a rule that can be used every day. Adoption should depend on readable feedback and the project’s behavior, without treating an absence of warnings as proof of functional correctness.
