Rust 1.96.1: qualifying a compiler fix

Novoid

An update to examine

On 30 June 2026, Rust 1.96.1 fixed a miscompilation related to an optimization of its intermediate representation (MIR) and vulnerabilities in libssh2 bundled with Cargo.

Results matter alongside builds

Compilation without errors does not fully describe the resulting program’s behavior. For a systems application, we recommend keeping observable scenarios: processing known input, writing an expected result and checking errors on invalid data.

When changing compilers, these scenarios let teams compare two executables instead of relying only on a build log. Tests should use the options actually employed to distribute the software. Checks performed solely in development mode may not answer the same questions.

Keep a reproducible reference

Recording compiler version, target and dependencies lets another developer reproduce an observation. It also helps distinguish application code from the tools used to build it. Our priority would be to evaluate this patch on a limited batch, then review results before broadening the update.
