PostgreSQL 19 beta 1: preparing migration trials
Qualification begins
On 4 June 2026, the PostgreSQL project released PostgreSQL 19 beta 1. It is a test release; the team advises against production use.
Start with project queries
For an application team, useful work starts with a representative sample: frequent searches, concurrent writes, reports and maintenance operations. We recommend keeping a baseline on the version currently used, with the same anonymized data and measurement conditions.
A successful migration means more than a database starting up. Check query results, transactions and the extensions actually installed. An improvement in one query’s response time cannot offset a functional regression elsewhere.
Make observations actionable
Keeping the schema, a minimal query, configuration and error message turns a discrepancy into a useful report. Measurements should also distinguish warm caches from first access. At this stage, the beta’s value is finding incompatibilities early enough to understand them before deciding on a migration schedule.
