GitHub: limiting issues to collaborators
More targeted access
On 29 June 2026, GitHub added the option to restrict issue creation to collaborators with write access. An issue can report a defect or track work.
Choose a contribution route
Our interpretation concerns organization: before enabling a restriction, a team should know where other users can send feedback. A maintainer-only channel may suit an internal tool. For an open project, teams should also consider bugs discovered by outside users.
An access setting does not solve request triage on its own. We recommend clarifying the information needed: context, reproduction steps, observed result and expected result. These details make a report actionable regardless of its channel.
Check different roles
A simple trial examines the maintainer journey and then that of a user without write access. Check interface messages and whether an alternative contact point is visible. The goal remains reducing noise while retaining a clear way to report a real problem.
