Node.js 26: Temporal arrives without an experimental flag
Time joins the runtime
In our retrospective May review, Node.js 26, released on May 5, 2026, enables Temporal by default. This API offers another way to handle dates and times; the release was then in the Current channel. Node.js announcement.
Name the business requirement
An appointment in a particular time zone, an invoice date and the instant of a server event describe different requirements. For a team, the first benefit is articulating that difference before choosing a representation. A useful exercise revisits cases near midnight or a daylight-saving transition, then writes down the expected result in the language of the business.
Prepare a focused migration
API availability alone does not justify replacing every date in a project. Starting with a workflow exposed to ambiguity helps assess the benefit and verify serialization at boundaries: database, API and browser. Dependencies also need trying with this major version. The May announcement opens an evaluation phase; it does not validate the existing application.
