TurboQuant: compressing the KV cache of AI models

Reducing AI memory use

On 24 March 2026, Google Research presented TurboQuant, a vector compression method. Its applications include the key-value (KV) cache used during language-model inference and vector search indexes.

Quantization, not a quantum coprocessor

The method combines quantization techniques, including PolarQuant and a correction stage based on QJL. The aim is to represent data with fewer bits. The publication describes neither a quantum computer nor a quantum coprocessor.

An infrastructure research direction

Reducing KV cache memory can help serve models more efficiently. Google's reported results concern its experiments; their relevance to a particular infrastructure must be measured with the actual models, hardware and workloads.
